Yudatel Abramovich's Photo Sent to His Friend Shabse Musikanth. 1925. Courtesy of Alain Musikanth.
These kinds of photos were shown to friends and sent as postcards in interwar Lithuania. The benefit of physical exercise for the body and soul isn't just a modern idea. In the interwar period, people were seriously involved in athletics, hygiene, and building their “sex appeal“ by taking care of their bodies and honing their muscles.
The postcards show half-dressed men (and sometimes women) showing off their physique – the result of strict discipline and long hours dedicated to sport.
