Bargains and Tragedies

The Linkuva market had been alive with activity since early morning. Carts, loaded with all sorts of goods, rumbled into the central square where vendors were preparing for another long and hard day. Amid the many stalls and gathered shoppers, tense negotiations were taking place, sometimes with unexpected challenges. What happened this time?

An energetic man was stubbornly haggling over the price of firewood. “I’ll take it all for half the price,” he insisted. However, the seller, used to such negotiators, shook his head, claiming he was tired of hauling the firewood to the market. But soon he smiled and threw out a challenge. He would sell it cheaper if the man carried the firewood on his back in two trips. The eyes of the market visitors turned to the buyer. He grabbed the rope, tied up the firewood, and successfully carried it away. The press marveled at his strength.

Another memorable event took place at the Rokiškis horse market. Two wealthy farmers got into an argument over which horse was faster and decided to hold a race. The news quickly spread throughout the market, and soon everyone gathered to witness the unusual spectacle. The race lasted for several hours. However, the outcome was tragic. One of the horses, unable to control its speed, crashed into a stationary cart. The 3000-litas horse was killed, and both racers were injured.

Negotiations were a common part of market life, but some stood out because of their consequences or playful nature.
